GoDaddy.com Domains Boycott Fails to Gain Momentum

Posted in Domain Names on Friday, December 30, 2011, 08:17

The planned boycott of Godaddy appears to have been abandoned following yesterdays announcement of them not supporting SOPA (Support Online Piracy Act)

Due to the planned action, GoDaddy stated on Thursday morning it was not abandoning SOPA but was now opposed to it. This clearly eased the concerns of its customers by stating it was only opposed to SOPA which clearly had an effect on any negativity and planned boycotts as it appeared Godaddy backed down on the initial decision. Customer reaction clearly still holds plenty of weight by getting GoDaddy to change its stance.

Along with the usual aggressive advertising and marketing campaigns with the ever popular Go Daddy Girls, they actually had an increase in domains yesterday. There was double the number of transfers with 27,843 coming in compared to only 14,492 going out.

Upon looking over those numbers, it is clear that there was very little momentum gathered from yesterdays announcement of planned boycotts of GoDaddy’s services. It would have been interesting to see the numbers without the announcement of being opposed to SOPA rather than abandoning it.

Huffington Post Faces .XXX Cyber Squatters

Posted in Domain Names on Monday, December 12, 2011, 09:36

The Huffington Post, a branch of AOL, one of the biggest online news organisations in the world could be looking at a lawsuit against an American man that has registered the HuffingtonPost.XXX domain name.

Justin Crews registered the URL to Valley Canter, California on December 10th and can keep the name until the same date in 2012 when it must either be renewed or abandoned.

It seems that AOL has either forgotten to register the domain or simply wasn’t prepared to purchase it; it has covered the XXX domains registration process a few times now so it’s definitely aware of the potential for cyber squatter should the domains remain available.

It’s thought that Justin Crews doesn’t have anything to do with the Huffington Post and the site doesn’t currently point to anything so it’s uncertain whether or not Crews simply wants a buy out, or whether he intends to spite AOL with a pornography site.

The likes of Google (Google.xxx) and Amazon (Amazon.xxx) were reserved during the earlier registration stages, and celebrity names like Beyonce.xxx and JustinBieber.xxx have also been taken off the table.

XXX Domain General Availability Today – Dec 7th

Posted in Domain Registrar on Wednesday, December 07, 2011, 05:07

Years of arguments and lawsuits surrounding the controversial .XXX domain haven’t paid off, as it’s finally made available to the general public today.

The ICANN approved domain extension has already been applied for over 100,000 times during the Sunrise and Landrush periods of its registration process.

ICM Registry is predicting that the number of registrations will double in the coming weeks now that the domain is on general sale, that is, it is no longer limited to registrations from the pornography/adult entertainment industry.

The protect XXX addresses from spam, sites will be scanned on a daily basis using malware scanning software from MacAfee. ICM also says that the sites will be much easier to moderate than traditional pornography sites as all XXX pages will be tagged with safety labels, making then more detectable and therefore more block-able, from browsers. Around 250 million pages have already been labelled.

Registering a .XXX domain will cost roughly $100 a year depending on the name, however, each domain registrar will offer different renewal packages.

ICANN Sued over XXX Domain

Posted in Domain Names on Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 09:24

Since its proposal in 2000, the XXX domain has been surrounded by controversy with organisations from schools to internet companies deeming the domain unnecessary and tasteless.

Now it seems that even the porn industry, the very people at which the domain is aimed, is taking a stance against ICANN’s decision to offer out the .XXX TLD.

According to PCWorld New Zealand two pornography networks are looking to sue ICANN and ICM, claiming they are both guilty of antitrust violations.

Digital Playground and Manwin (YouPorn and Playboy website manager) are suggesting that the introduction of the XXX domain is forcing industries to register expensive domains in order to defend their brands.

The companies are calling it 'defensive registration', with Manwin saying “It uncovers a pernicious monopoly at the very heart of the Internet.”

Fabian Thylmann, Managing Partner of Luxembourg-based Manwin, also added “Ending anticompetitive practices by ICM and ICANN will not only protect our business, but help other companies compelled to pay a fee to keep their names unassociated with an .XXX designation."

There has been no official statement from ICANN or ICM regarding the lawsuit.

ICANN News: Should January’s TLD Extension be Banned? CRIDO Think So.

Posted in Domain Names on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, 09:56

A collection of 87 business groups and organisations has joined forces in an attempt to prevent ICANN from expanding the current range of top level domains (TLDs) from 22, to what will effectively be limitless.

The group have called themselves the Coalition for Responsible Internet Domain Oversight (CRIDO)and have written a letter to U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary, John Bryson, asking that he prevent ICANN from opening the registration window on January 12th, 2012.

The letter stated that “ICANN's decision was not made in the public interest, does not promote consumer trust, and does not benefit the public, as required in the Affirmation of Commitments between ICANN and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration."

CRIDO believe that the new TLDs will simply force businesses to spend even more time, money, and effort to protect their brands from cyber squatters looking to register identical or similar TLDs.

Some of the biggest brands in the world have put their names to the letter, which CC'd 17 members of Congress and half a dozen Commerce Department officials, including American Express Co., Ford Motor Co., General Electric Co. and The Procter & Gamble Co.

ICANN, who has been reviewing the need for new TLDs for over six years, has yet to respond to the CRIDO’s letter.

XXX Domain Landrush Period Opens

Posted in Domain Names on Wednesday, November 09, 2011, 06:34

Over 80,000 applications were made for .XXX domains in the first stage of its registration process, the Sunrise period.

The success of the domain is set to continue as domains registrar ICM Registry open its doors to the second wave of applications in the Landrush period.

The Landrush period officially began yesterday (8th) and will continue for 17 days until November 25th and allows members of the adult entertainment community to register their .XXX before they’re made available to the general public on December 6th.

At the end of the Landrush period all domains with only one application will be granted and domains with more than one applicant will go into a private auction with all involved parties.

ICM Registry CEO, Stuart Lawley says "Our goal is to offer an incredible opportunity to secure premium names they've always wanted.  This is a brand new domain so the opportunities are endless.  Adult site owners can find new ways to expand their existing online presence, develop new brands or connect with their fans."

XXX Sunrise Period a Success

Posted in Domain Auction on Tuesday, November 01, 2011, 10:55

With over 80,000 XXX domain applications submitted, the .XXX Sunrise A and B periods has been officially deemed a success by domain registrar ICM Registry.

The amount is believed to be the largest amount of applications of any Sunrise period, with over 78,938 trademarked/pre-owned names submitted and 1,524 other names allocated as part of The Founders Program.

Stuart Lawley, CEO of ICM Registry says “We couldn’t be happier about the success of the Sunrise period […] There is always a risk with a new TLD that you may build it and nobody will come. We are thrilled that over 80,000 applications came! In fact, the .XXX Sunrise period results far exceeds those of any other new sTLD, including .mobi, .asia and even that of .co that re-launched last year with a significant marketing campaign. We look forward with great anticipation to Landrush, opening next week and General Availability on December 6, which is when the fun really starts.”

The 17 day Landrush period will begin on November 8th and is reserved specifically for members of the adult sponsored community who wish to register a domain.
